Many aging adults become depressed and isolated. If you can spot the signs of those problems, you can help her to solve them in ways that she enjoys. The first task is to start gathering your data so that you know where she stands right now.
Check Her Appearance.
How your senior looks can be a big indicator of how she’s feeling. If she’s normally very well put together and that doesn’t describe her lately, she may be having some emotional difficulty with her life. Unwashed hair, teeth that haven’t been brushed, and clothes that don’t match or that are stained are all big clues. Even if your elderly family member just doesn’t quite look right, you might need to probe deeper.
Ask about Her Social Life.
Talk to your elderly family member about her social life. Is she getting out and about like she used to? It’s possible that she might need help with transportation but she’s not excited about talking to you about that. It’s also possible that she just isn’t feeling well enough to be as social as she was. But it’s important for you to figure out what the reasons are for that change.
Investigate Her Eating Habits.
You also need to make note of your senior’s eating habits. If she’s not choosing healthy foods but is instead relying on takeout food or pre-packaged foods, she might not be getting the right nutrients. One easy way to do this is to simply check her fridge and pantry. Look at the types of foods that she has on hand and see what she might be eating from the food she has stocked.
Look around the House.
What does the house look like? Much like your senior’s own appearance, how her home looks can tell you a lot about what is giving her the most trouble right now. If her home is usually immaculate but now has layers of dust, it might be time to have someone come in to help with that. Remember also that a dirty or even just cluttered home can dramatically impact how your elderly family member feels.
If you’re concerned about your senior’s mental health but you’re not sure how it’s changed, you might want to consider hiring elder care providers. They can help you to determine where your senior could use extra help and what situations might be causing stress and strain for her.
