You’re looking into senior care services for your dad. Do you know where to start? It’s a new experience, and few people know what to ask. They rely on the things they’re told during a phone conversation. Here are three questions you need to think about before you make a call. When you do call an agency, be sure to ask each question.
Will Your Family Get to View Hiring Information?
When you hire a caregiver, you’ll want to read the caregiver’s resume and make sure that person meets your expectations. You should also see if you can read the reviews from past clients and get a list of references.
With references, you should be able to call people who’ve used a caregiver and see what they think. Laws can limit the information that’s given. At the very least, go online and see if you can find online reviews and information for that caregiver, too. If there were issues, it’s likely you’ll find reports filed with the state and possibly some newspaper articles.
Are the Caregivers Required to Hold HHA or PCA Certification?
If you’re happy with the things you’ve found, see if the caregiver is licensed or certified. Find out what training is required of all caregivers hired by the agency. Find out if the caregivers hold any special credentials, such as home health aide or personal care assistant certification.
Can Your Family Interview Different Caregivers?
Some senior care agencies try to pair new clients with a caregiver who is available at the required times. You should always ask how they match a new client to a caregiver. If you have the option to interview caregivers, it’s beneficial.
With an interview, your dad can see which caregiver is the best fit for his personality and interests. You may also want to see what experience a caregiver has with your dad’s needs. If he has Alzheimer’s, it takes a different skill set than someone who has severe arthritis pain.
If one caregiver doesn’t feel like a good fit, he can ask to see if anyone else is available. Not every senior care agency is set up to allow this, but it never hurts to see if they can.
Once you have your list of questions to ask, talk to us. Make sure you’re happy with the answers you get. A representative can walk you through the rest of the process after that. Call today to arrange senior care services for your dad.
